LIVELY DEBATE IN THE SENATE. Senators Chandler, Hill and Martin Pass Compliments. In the Senate last Thura dry night a lively debate sprung up between a number of the Senators over Senator Chandler's resolution declaring that there was no lawful election by the Legislature of Kansas of a United States Senator when Senator Martin was declared to be elected. He began by stating that if the seats of Senator Martin, of Kansas and Senator Roach, of North Dakota, were to be vacated, tne .Legislatures or those two States now m session could elect itepu oil cans ; and the Democrats in the Sen ate, even u they retained the votes of Senators Kyle, of South Dakota, and Allen, of Nebraska, (Populist) would lose control of the Senate and there would be a majority of two against them. It had been always his judgment that these two seats should be vacated, and his resolution would certainly be adopted if the Senate would act upon indisputable facts. The Republicans and Populists of the Kansas Legislature had b en hoodwinked into electing Mr. Martin, who at once became in the senate a most uncompromising and relentless Democrat. From Kansas, Mr. Chandler passed to North Dakota, claiming that Mr. Roach had been elected bv interfer ence and manipulation of the basest sort. He charged Mr. Gorman with having thwarted investigation into Mr. Roach's case, and read volumi nous extracts from the Congressional Record to prove it. And now," he said in his bitterest tones, "the cash ier of the Citizens National Bank of Washington represents the State of North Dakota in the appropriate garb of a Democratic Senator. When Mr. chandler took his seat, Mr. Hill rose and said, in serions tones: "I will now speak on the ap propriation bill" Laughter, and he proceeded to make a scorching attack upon Air. Unandier. Kaia Mr. iiui, w ith great earnestness and passion : I could forgive him what he said about the Senator from Kansas (Mr. Martin) but I cannot forgive him for the cruel, mean, contemptible, ma- icious attack which he made on the Senator trom North Dakota (Mr. Roach.) Applause. The Senator said that he had no pleasure in at, tacking Mr. Roach; but I do no believe that a single senator who heard him say that believed smgle word of it. A hyena that v"i seek ing to tear a woman limb from limb might just as well turn round and say that it took no pleasure in the attack ; and I would believe the hyena just as quickly as I would believe the Senator from New Hampshire. Laughter. "Have you forgotten' what took place in 1876? Have you forgotten what party it was that cheated Sam uel J. Tilden out of the presidency, to which he was elected by a popular majority? Do you recollect the con duct of our friend Chandler, when he went to Florida to steal the btate from tne Democracy and give it to the Republican party. Some ap plause in the gallery. He is the last man in the world to make charges against the Democratic party. I hate a hypocrite, beyond all other men. l do notiiKe tne man wno stands up and says 'I am holier than thou. ' The Senator from New Hamp shire need not deceive himself. His party has not come here to stay. As the Democratic party is tne party or the people, the party of the constitu tion, the par y which believes in equal rights and equal privileges, in honest elections and in tan piay, tnac party, though now temporarily in the minority, will certainly rise again, and proDaDiy mucn quicker than the Senator trom iNew Hamp shire imagines." Applause in the galleries. Mr. Martin rose to reply to air. Chandler, and said: "If the state ment he had heard 01 that benator were true, or half true, instead of representing the magnificent Com monwealth of New Hampshire in the Senate of the United States, he should be in the penitentiary. New Hamp shise, Mr. Martin continued, "used to be represented in the Senate Dy men of splendid intellect; but the eagle had been driven from its nest and a buzzard had taken the eagle's place and vomited forth its filth on every occasion." Mr. Martin was not permitted to continue. He was called to order and for some time there was much confusion and disorder; but finally Mr. Martin withdrew his objection in words "out of respect to the Sen atebut he still retained his own opinion respecting the subject, Laughter.! Here is what did with an Old Reliable Plater. The first three days that I had the Plater I plated 75 sets of knives, forks, spoons, etc.. which, when delivered brought me in about $92.00; cost of metal about $3.75, leaving a gross profit of $88.25 for my time and trou ble, and everyone was well pleased with the work, and I come home with double the amount of goods to be plated. Phenix landed in Greensboro, N. C, from Rochester, New York. He had, when he got to Greensboro, one dollar ana ntty cents, but he had in addition to this sum a very large supply of anxiety to work, and it did not take him long to get at it . He found a friend in the late W. M. Houston, who extended mm encour agement and substantial aid. He openened a small produce commission store with Mr. Houston as the real owner and Mr. Phoenix as the man ager. The enterprise grew and pros pered under his excellent manage ment, and in a lew years Mr. Phoe nix was a partner. Mr. Houston was killed in the terrible Bostian bridge wreck. Mr? Phoenix by this time had engrafted himself in the conn dence of the business public He bought the Houston interest-in the business, and became sole owner, and today he does probably the largest business in receiving and shipping produce of any establishment in the State. tiis daily receipts from an over the State of field, garden, dairy and barnyard products are enormous. His acquaintance with Northern buyers gives him a great advantage, and as fast as the products arrive they are reshipped on orders that are at all times on his file from Northern and Eastern buyers, beginning in this small way, he has by energy, vim and hard work, pushed the bus iness along, until today the name of John J. Phoenix is known almost from one end of the country to the other. He is a pleasant, affable young gentleman, with whom it must he pleasant to deal, and around his large establishment in Greensboro you never find the slightest cessation of business activity, dray load after dray load of chickens, turkeys, ducks geese and other fowls, of butter, eggs, vegetables and farm products of every kind are coming in and go ing out from morning till night, day in and day out. Thus it is that an other stranger has come into our midst engaged in a business that many of our own people would think bad very limited possibilities and by pluck and energy made a comforta ble fortune and laved the foundation for still greater achievements Raleigh News and Observer. There used to be tobacco patches aron some of the old plantations in South Carolina, from which the slaves raised as much of the plant as was needed by the owners and themselves ; but not a leal ot it was grown tor the trade until a few years ago. Some times a smoker could buy a few of the "long plantation dears made by the darkeys, and we have heard that they were always extolled by the buyers. Within the past ten years tobacco growing has become one of the im portant and profitable industries of the Palmetto State, and the annual crop runs, up to millions of pounds. Some of the growers get a yield of as much as 1,400 pounds to the acre, and it pays well when sold for twelve or thirteen cents a pouni. In the tobacco South Carolina has become a competitor with North Carolina, Vir ginia and Kentucky, and its influence must soon be left in the Western and Northern markets. The facts furnish an illustration of the advantages of that diversification of crops in the South about which the Sun has so often spoken. A number of silver Congressman have issued an address calling for unity of action upon the part of all Democrats who favor bimetallism. Following are some extracts from the address: "We believe that the establishment of gold as the only monetary stan dard and the elemination of silver as a full legal-tender money will increase the purchasing power of each dollar, add to the burden of all debts, de crease the market value of all other forms of property, continue and In tensify business depression, and finally reduce the majority of the people to financial bondage. "We believe that no party can hope for enduring success in the United States so long as it advocates a single gold standard, and that the advocacy of such a financial policy would be especially fatal to a party ' which, like . the Democratic party, derives its voting strength from those who may, without reproach, be called the common people. "We believe that a large majority of the Democrats of the United States favor bimetallism and realize that it can be only secured by the restoration of the free and unlimited coinage of gold and silver at the present ratio, and we assert that the majority have and should exercise the right to control the policy of the party and retain the party name."
